The Secret: A Review

When I write reviews, I generally write reviews only about products that will really help my readers, whether I'm writing about business or Christianity. However, I really felt a need to write a review on this book because I have to say that although I've read a lot of self help books, as well as watched a lot of videos, this has to be the biggest piece of metaphysical BS I've ever laid my hands on.

Supposedly the author, Rhonda Byrne read the book "The Science of Getting Rich." Her goal, she says, is to bring this "Secret" to the world that's been kept from use for hundreds of years. She makes it sound like people have died to protect this "secret."

Let me be honest here: do I believe in the Law of Attraction? The answer is yes, but the Law of Attraction isn't all this book is about.

First, Byrnes makes the Law of Attraction to sound like you have your own genie out there in the universe, and all you have to do is rub your magic lamp, and you'll get whatever you want out of life.

One thing I have learned after going to college, after serving in the US military not once, but twice, and raising three girls by myself is that anything worth having is something you have to work for. Positive belief simply isn't enough. You have to do the work.

Byrne makes it sound like all you have to do is wish for it, and it will happen.

Another thing that troubled me about all of this is that it's also all about money, or at least that's the way it came across to me. If money is all it takes to make you happy, why is Britney Spears so miserable? She has $100 million! In fact, why is so much of Hollywood miserable?

It's because they miss the most important aspect of having, doing, and being everything you want to be: purpose. Ultimately, it is through purpose that what we achieve tastes so sweet, and our ultimate purpose is to have a relationship with God, with Jesus Christ. Without that, it's really all meaningless. (If you don't believe me, read Ecclesiastes).

Should you read this book? Yes, but all it will tell you is what I'm about to tell you in one sentence: how you think determines whether or not your will succeed.

I do believe that you have to have the right mindset. This is important. I do believe that the wrong mindset can attract bad things into our lives. What I reject is this wish god thinking.

The bottom line is this:

1. Know what you want.

2. Once you know what you want, then do the work it takes to have what you want.

3. Keep praying, working, and believing, and be ready to receive when God is ready to bless you. He's always on time.
